Waterfront Forum Szczecin 2010

Within last centuries water is one of the fundamental resources constantly degraded during the process of urbanization of the developing cities. From the standpoint of architecture and urban planning it is made a kind of return to old cities, degraded and often abandoned areas and docks. Modern architecture and city planning finds there an opportunity to create a different environment from modernist standard solutions. The attractiveness of these areas are principally: proximity to water, high value, preserved architecture and relics very often of the old port infrastructure. All worth preserving, suitable for adaptation and use for today's various needs, foremost among them the cultural needs. This type of areas, often located in the vicinity of inner-city neighborhoods, are natural and attractive development directions. A return to the old abandoned space also exists in relation to ports. The old, relatively shallow docks are now occupied and adapted readily to the port functions such as sailing and other water sports (marina), passenger shipping, ferry and extensive facilities for tourists. The neighborhood of downtown and surrounding tourist attractions of the waterfront areas conduct such initiative. Topic of waterfront raises an increasing interest in the areas of cities located inland.
